The International Analytical Psychology Student Program at the C. G. Jung Institute of San Francisco, 2009 – 2011
The Institute is pleased to invite applications to become its International Student for the two-year period, September 1, 2009 - August 31, 2011. Applications for this position will be accepted from December 1, 2008 through January 31, 2009. Inquiries regarding a potential applicant’s eligibility to apply can be made at any time. What follows is an orientation to the program and the application procedure.
Program Description
The International Analytical Psychology Student Program is an advanced training opportunity offered by the C. G. Jung Institute of San Francisco (SFJI) in collaboration with the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (ITP) in Palo Alto, California. The program, now in its 13th year, offers a two-year course of intensive study in analytical psychology to a mental health professional from a country where formal Jungian analytic training is not available. Our most recent students have been from India, Hungary, and Poland. Past Students have been a psychiatrist from Korea, an academic psychologist from China, and a psychology student from Bulgaria.
The program is both academic and clinical, and it is intended both to further personal development and to enhance skills as a depth psychotherapist. The Student attends seminars with our first- and second-year analytic candidates, participates as an intern in our Clinic, and matriculates in the doctoral program in psychology at the Institute for Transpersonal Psychology.
The International Analytical Psychology Student Program is independent of our Analytic Training Program and our Internship Program for predoctoral psychology students working at our Clinic, even though some of the Student’s courses and placements will take place in common with these other Institute trainings. Our International Student will not be certified as an analyst by our program, but she or he will have been given a fine grounding for the further study of analytical psychology.
Qualifications
The International Analytical Psychology Student must have sufficient academic preparation to be able to participate in coursework at the doctoral level at ITP. In addition the Student must be a practicing mental health professional who has completed a program of study in his or her home country that places her or him in a reasonable range of the qualifications of our candidates in analytic training; and be someone who has demonstrated personal and professional qualities that accord with the standards set forth in “The C. G. Jung Institute of San Francisco Analytic Training Program,” the brochure describing the program for analytic candidates at the Institute, which is included in the application packet.
An International Student must be sufficiently proficient in English to be able to participate in the program described above and may be asked to take an English proficiency exam, such as TOEFL, to verify this.
Costs
Although there are no fees or charges for tuition in the Institute seminars, or for the courses at ITP, supervision in work with patients through our Clinic, and personal analysis with a certified Institute analyst, there is no stipend for this position. The International Student must be prepared to accept financial responsibility for travel and living expenses that will be incurred while participating in the program. The student will have to arrange for room and board and medical insurance and a way of commuting to Palo Alto, about thirty-five miles south of San Francisco. We estimate the minimum living cost a single individual will have to underwrite to be about U.S. $15,000 for each year of training, as the actual cost of living in the Bay Area can be a good deal more. Scholarship money can sometimes be made available to help offset some of the expenses, but funds are very limited as they depend upon the generosity of donors year to year.
