In this conference, we will explore the extraordinary psychological and spiritual pressures on people of color in 2021 and work together to identify new strategies to support the community, with a focus on how psychological and religious perspectives can mutually enrich and strengthen each other.

COVID, and the things we are doing to fight it, has created a mental health crisis. The effects of COVID have been disproportionately damaging to people of color. The movement for black lives has brought the profound racial inequities in America into broad awareness and is affecting vital change, but the experience has come with new psychological suffering for people of color.
How might this time of crisis create an extraordinary opportunity to change mental health stigma in the African American community and improve access to mental health resources? Faith leaders and mental health professionals can work closely together to expand education in the community about stressors affecting mental health and to help individuals include mental health as a crucial element of their spiritual practice. Prayer is one powerful tool. We need many tools right now, and counseling and psychiatry can support spiritual growth.
