In this class we will explore consciousness and aspects of Western religious history dating as far back as 12,000 B.C, as well as the modern-day eruption of interest into psychedelics and consciousness.

What do Jesus, Dionysus, and psychedelics have in common? What do mystics know about the core of religious truth? What is reality? While the roots of our human nature are ever-present, they are not always evident to us, and myriad systems, institutions, and worldviews have sprung up over the centuries in order not just to put us in contact with our nature, but to redirect its energies. In our age, as various factors emerge that cause the “truths” of these systems to lose their grip on many individuals, a large shift has been set in motion.
We will question the impact of decisions made long ago by those in power, and the current consequences of those decisions upon our medical, social, political, economic, and religious institutions. What role may these elements have had in the birth and life of our cultural traditions, both sacred and profane?
